چکیده

To satisfy the increased demand for forest products, much of the future timber supply is expected to be derived from improved trees grown on managed plantations. This fast-grown resource will tend to be harvested in short-age rotations and will contain higher proportions of juvenile wood compared with wood in current harvests. As a result, current allowable properties may need to be reduced in the future. This report explores four options for monitoring the properties of fastgrown wood and briefly discusses the advantages and disadvantages of these approaches. The recommended multiplestage sampling approach is illustrated in detail using simulated results based on the North American In-Grade test results for Southern Pine. Finally, the report presents details of a “real world” example of monitoring lumber properties currently being conducted by the Southern Pine Inspection Bureau.

Comparison between Allowable Properties Method and Reliability Analysis Method to Determine Design Values of Visually Graded Chinese Larch 40 x 65 mm Lumber

The reliability analysis method and the allowable stress method were both applied in this study to determine design values of ultimate compression strength (UCS) of visually-graded 40 x 65 mm dimension Chinese larch lumber. A total of 784 lumber samples were tested on the static full-size compression strength, according to Chinese National Standards. The goodness-of-fit for the UCS distribution...

Grade distribution and drying degrade of sweetgum and yellow-poplar structural lumber

The fact that the supply of southern pine timber is changing to include more lower quality plantation stock may provide incentive for utilizing lower density hardwoods for structural lumber. Yellow-poplar and sweetgum are potential substitutes for southern pine. A major problem in utilizing soft hardwoods for structural lumber is the difficulties associated with drying. A study of the grade dis...

Epicormic Branches Affect Lumber Grade and Value in Willow Oak

A case study was conducted in a 50-yr-old bottomland oak stand in central Alabama to investigate the relationship between epicormic branches and lumber grade and value in willow oak (Quercus phellos L.). The stand had been thinnedfrom below 7-10 yr earlier, resulting in a wide variety of epicormic branch conditions on the residual trees. A sample of 41 willow oak trees was selected before the s...

Glued Structural Members

References 11–21 lued structural members are manufactured in a variety of configurations. Structural composite lumber (SCL) products consist of small pieces of wood glued together into sizes common for solid-sawn lumber. Glued-laminated timber (glulam) is an engineered stress-rated product that consists of two or more layers of lumber in which the grain of all layers is oriented parallel to the...

Neural Network Classifiers to Grade Parts Based on Surface Defects with Spatial Dependencies

In many manufacturing operations, unfinished or unassembled parts are not necessarily accepted or rejected in their entirety. Oftentimes, they are given some qualifying grade that indicates their worth to potential buyers or their suitability for particular processing operations. The manufacture of hardwood lumber in sawmills follows this general procedure. Lumber is graded based on appearance ...
